In the olden days, people with friends living far from them kept contact by (snail) mail. Such correspondences went by camels, rail, or canoes and took weeks or even months to arrive, with a high risk of letters getting lost. Every letter received was precious.
Today, we have the luxury of the Internet. Everyone is accessible instantly across the globe. Messages no longer get lost. We have piles of them - everywhere. Yet, these infinite possibilities and hurried pace overwhelm us, and deep relationships seldom have time to develop. We put less care and thought into messages. By not taking time to express what we truly mean, the sender and recipients perceive each other more superficially.
I believe our needs remain the same as that of people in earlier times. We still need that intimate contact. So while we genuinely attempt to connect, what comes out can resemble spam.
Retired friends on XHamster make me bewildered. Retiring feels like virtual suicide. I hope my spammy messages were not the reason. Perhaps the friend just has moved on to something better. But I cannot be sure.
I hope my retired friends will return some days.
