Mysteries of Sex

I often wonder why I enjoy sex so much. Since it is not polite to bring up this subject in regular conversation, I was left to compare myself to other creatures in secret.

I have seen in some nature programs that at full moons, corals collectively release their sperms and eggs into the warm ocean tides - that seems joyous. Then we have the humpback salmon, charging upstream to their one-in-a-lifetime sex party, totally ignoring the deadly changes in their hormone-wrecked bodies - they are certainly motivated. Perhaps I am being governed by the same laws of nature as the salmons or the corals.

But then we have the theory of evolution that says something about the survival of the fittest. Tools of discernment help us survive and procreate. We know instinctively to avoid bad things and seek good things. Our taste buds instantly warn us of spoiled food. Pain warns us of illnesses of the body or mind. Senses let us recognize suitable mates with whom to have sex and produce offspring. Ideally, I should, therefore, have sought out a bosomy lady.

Now, the latter scientific fact does not apply to me, as I seek to mate with a male. But that male, although possibly very well fit, couldn't result in any offspring. So either the science I came over is wrong/incomplete, or I have missed something critical. Is my enjoyment purposeful?

Does anyone care to cast light on the topic?
